Cabos is updated regularly and has pulled a bunch of code together from the best p2p apps - it's a freeware version of Acquisition, but without the non-responding dev. http://cabos.sourceforge.jp/

I don't understand why people think Newsfire is so great. Is it because it's pretty? I found it really annoying and couldn't justify paying US$30 (or whatever it is) for it.

Thanks. Download and tried, but I am getting a message I don't get with Acquisition...
"The JAVA software cannot be loaded".
As far as I know I have JAVA loaded.
Sorry for hijacking this thread, if I need to start another I will

Yep in my opinion thats probably the biggest reason. It definitely isnt because its the best rss reader IMO. I use NetNewsWire Lite which does everything and its free.

I bought Aquisition a while ago, and haven't had any activation troubles - mostly the crappy software, which is nowhere near the speed or quality of Windows P2P apps.
I find I've gone off Gnutella P2P almost completely - BitTorrent is much safer and faster, and it's not spam like half the stuff Aquisition presents.
As for xtorrent, I wouldn't both with it - Transmission is much, much better (and totally free). It's the only OS X BitTorrent app I use (on a daily basis).

I've been working with a group on "CrossWire" as a direct competitor to Acquisition. Afaik, it does use the Java core and some elements from Cabos, but with each public beta it's being rapidly recoded from "A new Cabos shell" to an entirely new client. Stay tuned.
At the moment it works on PowerPC's and Intels (via Rosetta) as the Intel universal builds we've put out have been flawed (the internal dylibs compile as universal, but only include PPC code, damn Compiler).

Download: http://www.crosswire.co.nr/prel/CrossWire_10b2_ppc.zip
And i'm not just here to plug the project... I just thought I would throw something into the discussion.
As for the problem SyncMan has, that can sometime happen when the Java libraries inside the application's packages become corrupted or incomplete. You may need to redownload it from a different mirror.

I don't know much about... any of these... Newswires - but - if any of you made payment by PayPal - you could attempt to kick the bugger's arse by sending an e-mail through PayPal's Resolution Centre - a 30 day wait - and PayPal will contact the seller in an attempt to get your money back...
... a thought

No that's not why. I don't want my RSS reader to have an inbuilt browser. I like how NewsFire shows the link and the description, and if I want more, a click launches the page in my browser in the background.
- I tried Vienna, but found that once I clicked on a feed, all messages instantly were marked as read.
- NetNewsWire is more an 'all-in-one' RSS reader. Clearly some people prefer that. I don't.
- NewsLife is a lame rip off from both NetNewsWire and NewsFire.
- Endo is just ugly.

I use NetNewsWire without the built in browser. I see the headline and description, press the left arrow key and it opens in my browser in the background

I love the word "douchebag"
I also love NetNewsWire for the fact that it's completely keyboard-only browsing. Down arrow to change feeds, right arrow to move to articles, down arrow to change articles in the preview pane, right arrow to open the article in a background tab for later reading. Love it.

I'll give that a try. Still, doesn't remove the bitter taste left in my mouth from Watanabe.

Comfort yourself with the knowledge that within mere days, anyone who Googles "David Watanabe douchebag" will find your thoughts on the subject.

Hahaha.
Looks like there's a digg entry with it in, so this thread probably won't get the top spot.
