What is a service?

Hi all

Please file under 'there is no such thing as a stupid question' but despite using Macs for almost 20 years there are some things I still don't understand. One of these is the services menu. What is a service and how do you use it?

Services seem to work best when you've selected something (try selecting this text) and then applying a service such as summarise, Mail --> Send selection to, etc. Some third party applications such as Quicksilver also have services which basically add functionality.

They are pretty much under-used due to lack of profile for them and understanding of them.

Hope this helps a little.

He's talking about the Services menu, under the Application menu in your menubar.

I'd describe the Services menu as a funky idea ruined by the stupidly large listing of things in there that can't be removed or hidden.

Service Scrubber seems pretty good in adjusting the menu.

It's sad - services were a big part of using NEXTSTEP (did I get the capitals right?), but they're almost completely hidden away in OS X. Try using a few thing such as the Summarize [sic] service, which can be useful.

Here's a good article and a link so some services you can download.
