Firewire Target Disk mode.

Is it possible to install a PPC version of OS X from an intel mac to a PPC mac using target disk mode?

No?

You'd have to start the install from the Intel Mac and since Tiger isn't Universal yet, there's no way of doing that.

You'll have to find a PPC Mac, run setup from there, then install it to your PPC Mac (#2).

Since it's only the installer you'd be running, not the OS itself, would it not be theoretically possible to do it under Rosetta? Or would the installer just refuse because it's on an Intel Mac?

Most of the operating system restore discs that have come with a computer typically don't work on other models of computers besides the variant they're bundled with. Legally, you aren't supposed to install the OS on another computer anyway (the discs that came with your computer are only for your computer, if you have another computer that needs OS X, buy another copy of OS X).

If you have a retail copy of Tiger (10.4.6 or higher), it will work on any PPC Mac as well as Intel Mac as it's fully universal binary.

I am interpreting the original question as the poster has a PPC version of OS X on DVD and wants to install it on a machine that does not have the capability of reading DVDs. This article here tells you how to do it for OS X server (option 2), which may also work for OS X client.

Good Luck!

It would be PPC retail if I new it was possible, I know it's possible to do this from PPC-PPC but is it possible to do this from Intel to PPC? Thanks for the article bljpoad, although I'm not sure if it was clear whether intel or PPC would work.

OK, I just tried it myself using a 10.3 retail CD in my intel iMac. I did this:

1) CD into intel machine, shut down
2) restart in target disk mode
3) boot your PPC mac (I used a 2001 flower power iMac) and hold down the option key

at this point the CD drive in the intel iMac spun up, and the 10.3 CD was recognised as bootable by the flower power iMac. I selected it and after a 1-2 min delay everything booted as normal and I was presented with the installer.

I hope that helps
