iPhoto 6 import crashing

Hi All,

I've just switched back to macs with an intel Mac Mini and I want to import my 15,000 photos into iphoto. I have copied all these from my external HDD to a folder in the 'Pictures' section on the Mac hard drive.

Previously my images were all managed using Picasa.

In iphoto I select 'import to library' and without fail after processing about 200 photos, iphoto crashes every time. This happens if I tell iphoto not to copy into the library as well.

Should I be able to do all 15k photos in one go or do I have to sit here and import one folder at a time?

Any other experiences migrating a large photo collection from Picasa into iphoto?

Part of the crash report below...

iphoto has just started crashing for me on import..
i tried SD card through a reader and through straight USB connection to my camera.
i've never had any problems before today.

i don't think anything has changed except the last security update.
anyone else having problems?

i could import the images plus avi using image capture, but when i tried to then import the folder into iphoto it just died..
i deleted the avi and it seems to be working now..

i think iphoto sometimes may have trouble with importing movies..
though it seems kinda random, as i have imported movies before..

iPhoto has some major issues importing movies - it either crashes, or sits there for an hour saying importing, and then just finishes, with no movie. I don't even bother, I just grab them from the USB stick.....

was this a canon camera? it seems the codec canon uses seems to crash intel macs iphoto and quicktime. To get around this I would use image capture to save the avi's to disc then delete them off the camera before importing the photos into iphoto.

I found a post though that showed me what quicktime library file to remove, from memory it has the word intel and some numbers in it and I removed the file. No problems playing the files since then.

yes, it was a canon s3is..
it's wierd because i have imported movie files before with not problem.. apart from one time when it took ages importing a particularly big file..

Problem solved.

I went and deleted all the files from the Library/Quicktime folder (there was a few in here as I was trying different codecs to get various files to work properly). I went back to iPhoto, had another go at the import and there was no problems at all. I have imported thouasands of photos since, all good.

The cameras used were a Canon Ixus 40 & 400.

I then added the following components back,

AC3MovieImport
DivX Decoder
DivX Encoder
XviD_Codec v0.5.1

And can play all the files I need so far.

So it looks like iphoto gets confused when importing .avi movie files from the digital camera if you have multiple avi import codec installed.
