Sleep mode on macbook ???

im just curious about sleep mode on a mabook... when i close the lid of the laptop down it enters sleep mode though it logs out of msn during this process.

Can i leave my msn open or download with transmission or firefox without it closing itself?

???

Sleep Mode disconnects from the internet, relinquishes communication with devices, keeps what is in RAM in RAM and then stops doing anything like using processor or Hard Drive.

What you are wanting is sleep mode not to be activated, but the screen to turn off. That way the computer would still be running, and MSN and downloads would continue as per usual (just your battery will drain heaps faster than if you just let it sleep).

Should work. Just don't close the lid completely or it will go to sleep unless you install some sort of hack but then your MacBook will be cooking itself...

You might be able to make a workflow in Automator that turns screen brightness down to 0 and mutes all sounds (like in Sleep Mode), and waits for a key to be pressed to reverse the changes... but I don't know exactly how to do that sort of thing myself.

d4mk: you want what is known as "clamshell mode".

Clamshell mode requires that your MacBook be connected to the mains power, and you can find the precise how-to here on Apple's site. Once you have put the MacBook to sleep in clamshell mode and woken it again, as long as you do not remove the power you can open and close the lid as much as you like; when it is closed, the screen electronics switch off, the rest of the machine still chatters along merrily.

All I do with my macbook is turn the screen brightness to down (to off) then close the lid about 9/10ths of the way as to try and stop the screen becoming a dust magnet lol.

Don't close the lid when donwloading or converting then??

Brains has already mentioned how to subvert the usual sleep process on a macbook, and leave it in 'clamshell' mode - where the screen is shut and off, but the computer remains on.
However others have also pointed out that this cooks your macbook.

If you want to have it sitting, plugged in, and not go to sleep after a certain time interval, then customise the options in the Power system preference
