Help me!!!!!!!!!!

I can't change, add or remove any network settings! What can I do without losing them (even though I can't change them, they still work) ?????

Yes. It's unlocked (notice the unlocked lock)


Whats with the "ether" and "DEFAULT_CFG"?

"ether" should be Ethernet and "DEFAULT_CFG" should be default location.

It looks like the fields your seeing, shouldn't be seen. You might need to do an archive and install possibly worse case.

If all else fails you can reset you preferences by moving /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

  1. Quit the System Preferences application, if it is running.
  2. Launch the Terminal application (found in /Applications/Utilities/).
  3. Type sudo -s and press Return
  4. Enter the password
  5. Type cd /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and press Return (note case sensitivity).
  6. Type mv preferences.plist preferences.plist.old and press Return.
  7. Launch the System Preferences application and check the Network pane. All Locations and PPP / LAN configurations should have been reset to OS default.

Have you installed any interesting software that does anything at all to the networking, such as some kind of firewall?

This just might be something that the repair permissions voodoo could help with, but more interesting if it does fix it is what software broke things in the first place.

i cannot create a new location, after i've unlocked the preference it is greyed out.

What is IceClean? Google shows it doesnt do a lot more than something like MacJanitor.

Does the same thing happen with another user account?

If you repaired permissions and it found a whole lot of stuff, I would restart. Some things may not have been loaded at startup properly (especially if you used a "maintenance" utility that didn't quite work as expected).

That sounds like a possible culprit right there.... as I said, try restarting.

The same thing happens in all acounts, including the root/System Admin. account.

Ok. After the restart the Mac does not recognise the ethernet cable being plugged into it. I cannot change network settings, so I cannot connect to the internet using it.


I am currently on a laptop PC running Win. 98.


Please, PLEASE help me!

Oh, one more thing, I don't know if it is relevant or not but, Network Setup Utility doesn't work.
