Toast 7 burning DVDs; files too big but not big enough !?

I burn DVDs from EyeTV through Toast without a problem most of the time except when the files are around 5Gig. If the the files are small enough to fit on a DVD they just work and when the file is 7Gig or above then Toast encodes to fit a DVD then burns, but when the file is just a little too big for a DVD then Toast just tells me there is not enough room on the disk. This is very annoying because this is often around 2 hours of SD TV which I seen to record quite often.

Is there a way to force Toast to encode a 5Gig file down to 4.2Gig? I have tried going through ffmpegX but it is really slow because I have to export from EyeTV then convert. It also gives unreliable results (sound out of sync, lots of conversion failures).
