AppleWorks not opening!

A friend's 400Mhz Powerbook G3 is running OS 10.3.5 and Appleworks 6. She gets the following error message when attempting to open a file or the application itself: "The application AppleWorks could not be launched beause of a shared library error: ")<AppleWorks><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_System><"

Any suggestions? Re-install Appleworks?

Cheers, Andrew

I think I've had this but can't remember how I resolved it. Quite likely it was with a re-install of AppleWorks. This kind of thing doesn't tend to happen without reason though. It may be a symptom of something else so I would be checking the machine out if it were mine.

A real troubleshooter might offer better responses but the first thing I'd do is trash the AppleWorks preferences (use Mac OS 10.3's find capabilities to look for all files with AppleWorks in their names). If that doesn't work, try re-installing (this should be a separate disc called "Software Restore" or something like that).

AppleWorks is not likely to be on a software restore disk unless it's a very old one. Trashing Prefs is certainly easier than reinstalling AW so it could be worth trying though I doubt it would do anything. I would keep a copy of all the pref files in case it doesn't fix it because a lot of stuff is stored in them.

Once the Appleworks issue is sorted (hopefully with a , you'd also do your friend a favour by updating to 10.3.9, for greater stability and fewer bugs.

... if you have OS 9 installed, does the same Carbonlib error message come up when Appleworks is launched there? If so, delete all prefs, then reinstall Carbonlib - available from Apple's site.

I had this problem and found that I had an older version of AppleWorks. I downloaded an update which fixed the problem.
