Help: cant install OSX, need to reset admin password.

Hey,

In another thread, i mentioned ive just picked up an old G4 powermac.

The machine has a pre release version of tiger. Now im trying to install the full 10.4 tiger, however, the machine had no DVD drive, so I chucked an old PC one in, but I can't get the machine to boot off it.

When i boot into the OS, the DVD install shows up fine. But I can't install the OS because I need the admin password.

Now this machine came from an iiNet hardware clearance, then went to my work and has just sat there for months, so i picked it up. No one has any idea what the admin password is. So I really dont know how to install a fresh 10.4

Is there anyway to reset the admin password?

Cheers guys.

Removing and replacing the RAM I think resets firmware passwords, but I could be wrong.

Well the password is no longer an issue, I just guessed it.

Now the problem:

It still wont boot off a cd to install the OS.

Can I boot off a disc image on the HD?

No, you cannot.

Remove the optical drive and ensure the jumper is set to MA (Master). If the drive is set to Master but won't boot the OS x Installer disc, change the mechanism. Most, but not all, optical drives are recognised by older Macs' firmware.

No. Have you got an external optical drive you can use? It may be possible to install from another machine with this one in in Target Disk Mode. Could also try making an image of a working system and using Disk Utility to "restore" that image to the machine in question over FireWire.

Oh, and just to keep things above-board ...

If the old machine did not come with original Mac OS X installation media, then you are not permitted to install Mac OS X onto it, even if it already has Mac OS X already installed. To do so violates the licence agreement. Using the Mac OS X Install discs that came with another machine also violates licence. To remain legit, you will need to purchase a boxed retail edition of Mac OS X.

Another thing: developer builds of 10.4 had 256 MB as a minimum requirement, but this was bumped to 512 MB for the commercial release. Any less than 512 MB and 10.4 is going to VM-swap itself into un-usability..

That's a thought - CPU specific Tiger disks won't boot on anything but the machine for which they were made. Is that what you're trying to do?

Good call, soul -- if the install disc is one that came with an Intel Mac, then it definitely won't boot a G4!

I've only got 256 and Tiger runs fine.

Absolutely but it seems much tighter than that with Tiger disks. They must do a Gestalt check for the specific model they are intended for I think because that's pretty much all they will boot. Not that I've tried it but from what I've heard here & elsewhere.

The password wasn't admin. It was actually "password"

The DVD is a retail disc. Still can't get it to boot. Think I'll just go and grab a firewire cable tomorrow and install from target disc mode.
