Funny Network problem (cant see network)
I have this funny problem, where my Network icon is a folder and not a globe, it wont let me browse or see anything on my network, I have checked all my sharing preferences they are all on and enabled.. even firewall off doesnt fix it... cant anybody shed any light on How I can fix this?

Sometimes my network icons don't work. I think Finder has issues because that icon actually gets transferred over the network. If you change the icon on the network share, then it can change on the mounted shares.
This is from experience. Haven't found too much documentation on it. But then again, it didn't bother me enough to care to look either

Can we get more information how this is set up?
What IP addresses you have
What other network devices you have connected to the network
What IP addresses do they have
Is the network share you're trying to access a samba share?
Can you ping the machine you're trying to access the share from?
Is the other machine actually sharing anything? Or is it a default share that the mac can't see?

It could also be a permissions issue, though I've never had my network folder screw up this way.

I have 5 macs all on airport network, they can see this machine.. but it cant see anything else... its ip is 10.0.1.4 others are on same range of 10.0.1 etc..
normally I just open the network icon.. and it sees all other computers on my network.. even PC's when they are on... using remote control.. I can see and control other computers from this system that cant see antyhing under the network icon.... you just open the icon.. and nothing is shown.... I can even ping other systems from this mac.... thus I am still very confused....

Can you connect by going to Finder > Go Menu > Connect to Server, and referencing the IP, or hostname (example.local)?
If you can, it's not an issue with file sharing (AFP) on the network, but rather Bonjour, which is what is used to populate that network list.
