Office 2007 for both Mac and Windows will be released at the same time, Feb/March 2007.

The Macintosh Business Unit are slow?
Apparently, the excuse is that they've got to test it with the PC version

Mac versions of everything are always slow, but I think we have it better.
Like Office for OS X vs Office 2000
Office 2004 vs Office 2003
It seems like they have extra time to work out the kinks and throw in a nicer UI as well.

Office 2004 was released for Mac before it was available for Windows.

Office 2004 has never been available for Windows.
The version number is meaningless anyway.
They are different programs on different platforms.
The Office 2003 file format is equivalent to the Mac Office 2004 format.
If you're wondering why there's a delay... check out http://blogs.msdn.com/macmojo/default.aspx and read some info about it from the mouths of the developers.
Given that Mac Office 2004 was released more recently than Windows Office 2003, it only makes sense that the next Mac version is roughly equidistant from the release between Windows Office 2003 and Windows Office 2007. Keep in mind they also have less developers working on it AND have to ensure file compatibility. Cut 'em some slack, they're good guys.

Quite frankly the only reason why I am looking forward to Office 2007 is because it is a universal binary. The old office still feels a bit too sluggish under Rosetta for my liking.
That said I think Office is really quite the scam, how many people really use that so called "new features" from time to time? If not for the proprietary file formats I'd say OpenOffice does the same thing just as well 90% of the time.

There is NeoOffice which is a more "OSX" version of OpenOffice.

Then use it. Nobody is making you use MS Office. I disagree that OpenOffice does the same thing just as well, so I don't use it. Every time I've downloaded and played with OpenOffice (on pc and mac), I've ended up deleting it in disgust... it just doesn't feel right.
The pc office 2007 is actually pretty impressive and I've found the new ribbon-ui makes for much more efficient usage of Word (most of the features are much more easily acccessed now and I don't feel so lost in huge menus which fill the screen).
But, to my original point. If you want to be an OpenOffice fanboy, then go use it. MacOffice fills a set of user needs and works well.
