I need to run a simple server on an iMac intel for my school. About 30 users only and simple user folder accessable from any of the dozen or so Macs is all that is required. OS X Server is over-kill. Does anybody know of a cheaper simpler solution please?

Running a Network Attached Storage distrobution of Linux would be better, if you didn't want to use OS X Server.

SharePoints is an application or a preference pane that makes it easy to add and delete share points like in the old Finder. In Mac OS X, by default, you are limited to sharing only what is in your public folder in your home directory. This program makes it easy to share any folder.
In addition SharePoints also brings back users and groups management to Mac OS X as well as easy configuration of AppleFileServer (AFS) and Samba (SMB) Server properties.

Also, look into Webmin - http://www.webmin.com/

With a bit of research and fiddling, OS X Client can do almost everything that OS X Server does using third party freeware.
