I usually leave my computer on overnight. A few weeks ago, I noticed that the fans were going in the morning, which was strange because it stays idle overnight. So I tried moving the mouse etc. nothing. So I manually rebooted. When I logged back in, I got an error saying "Mac OS X unexpectedly quit" (such a friendly way of saying it). My question is: would the computer have got a kernel panic screen, then after a while dimmed the display? Not sure. Just asking.

It can also get a KP without it turning on the screen. Happened a few times with my iBook G4.

Once the machine HAS kernal paniced though, the screen cannot go to sleep nor can it dim: everything will stay as it is. I asked two of the ASP techs at work.
