I often use Acrobat Reader to view PDFs. It's annoying, it's slow, but it has one feature that I can't seem to find in Preview.app. That feature is the "index tree". In Acrobat, on the left hand side you can have a index tree, and you can click on any item and Acrobat will take you straight to that point in the document. Viewing technical documents is virtually impossible without the index feature.

Can Preview.app do the index thing? Is there another app that can do it that isn't slow and bloated like Acrobat Reader?

Sure it's possible. In preview, when viewing a PDF, you will see in the top left corner a button called "Drawer".
Simply click it, and the drawer will open, displaying the index tree.

That what you had in mind?

Hmmmm. I feel very stupid right now - but I'm almost positive that the draw used to give me just the page preview things. Wait on.... it did used to do that, because I never pressed the 'list view' button in the drawer.

Damnit, I've been putting up with Acrobat for months now, when I could've been using the generally superior preview!

Thanks for the reality check andrewcod.

Now is there a way that you can make Preview "fit width" and "fit height" like in Acrobat? Or is it just "zoom to fit", which fits to whichever dimension is smallest?

As far as I know, you can only make Preview Zoom to Fit, as you said. (For those who don't know, you can access this by right-clicking the Preview toolbar and selecting Customize)

Still, I did discover another nice feature of Preview in the process...the ability to add text/image annotations to your PDF documents. (I thought this was only coming in Leopard!)

...Just thought those who don't know may be interested

I have been wanting this feature (list) in Preview too. But my Preview does not give me the list/page view buttons in the Drawer.

Is this a version issue? I have Preview version 3.0.7 on 10.4.7.

Cheers, Bandersnatch

Think you'll find it depends on the pdf - I've noticed the same thing.
