You can use Fire, which I was having trouble with keeping a stable connection with MSN.
I am using Proteus at the moment which is free but they ask for donations. Which is recommended.
There is a Terminal version I think, correct me if I am wrong guys, because I am unsure. X chat or something, that I think connects to different protocols...AIM, ICQ, MSN. etc...
Fire had a good GUI, Proteus says it transfers files but I have not been able to.
Any others had much experience with different Combination Chat Clients (CCC) haha another acronym.

I can recommend fire and the new upgrade should fix the msn connection issues.
http://fire.sf.net/
I'm going to try out Proteus now that i can afford it (it used to be shareware)
xchat is a irc chat application for x11, xchataqua is the macintosh version.

Hey, i've restored this thread now that we are on the new server and bandwidth isn't as much of an issue as it was before.

That's not Fire's fault, MSN's a POS. And i know that by experience because i use it. It's getting more and more unreliable, unfortunately.
