Default The Anzac Playlist is not "commemorative"

On the iTunes Australia store currently is a Anzac playlist.

"This selection of music recognises and pays tribute to the great Australian and New Zealand mateship and spirit of our land. Browse through some rockin' tracks to commemorate this special day.

Click the image to open in full size.

Surely Redgum's "I was only 19" is more commemorative than "My People." iTunes doesn't have the original, but they have some good covers.

I can't fathom how The Presets commemorate the Anzacs, its if the only requirement was that it was Aussie or NZ.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I think its abhorrent.

Probably no worse than the AFL's hijacking of the 'ANZAC legend' to sell a footy game.

You are reading too much into this.

The music is simply by Australian / New Zealand artists. That's about it.

I agree. Using a national day of remembrance and mourning to sell $2 products is frankly disgusting. Mind you, my criticism is not limited to Apple.

Yeah but if you don't do anything then people get on your case for ignoring the day. It's lose-lose.

Like most other public holidays, anzac Day has become commercialised - its a sad but all too common trend.

As well as the commercialism it is also being hijacked by jingoistic and nationalistic forces, its origins as a quite time of remembrance are being forgotten as it is almost celebrated and nonsense spouted like "they died for our freedom" which only serves to romanticise the abject horror and stupidity of war is.

Agreed; let's hope that Christmas and Easter never follow that route...

I've just come from the Martin Place Service in Sydney, where at minimum 35,000 people gathered.

I can assure you that the commemoration and procedure of this day is still alive and well.

Music retailers, football codes and advertising agencies can have their $2 specials: but I for one will not be buying.

I had to laugh how they showed the Essendon Rookies on the news, they took them to the Shrine to learn more about Anzac History. By the time I was their age I knew plenty about the Anzac story as it was drummed into me throughout primary/high school (public schools no less). Maybe they don't teach it at the private schools that most people seem to go to nowadays?

Someone else was quoted (can't remember who, possibly Demetriou) saying that x number of Essendon and Collingwood players died in World War 2 and that match was a rememberance to them. No mention of the millions of dollars they'd make from the capacity crowd

I wonder where the use of ANZAC stands with the legislative protection of the term:

The use of the term ANZAC is protected under Australian law from commercial exploitation except under very limited and specific conditions which include the prior approval of the Veterans Affairs department.
