Cost to replace iMac G5 Motherboard

Hi,

I have a 17" G5 iMac Gen 1, which had it's motherboard die while under warranty and then the power supply die last year which i had to pay to replace. Now it appears that the motherboard has died again and I'm wondering if anyone knows roughly how much it will cost to get fixed. If it doesn't cost to much then i will proberly do it and hopefully get another year out of it before buying a 24" intel iMac. Also is it possible to just buy the MB from somewhere and do it myself rather than have to pay an Apple Dealer to fix it?.

thanks

Mike

I don't know of anywhere that sells internal Apple hardware. Perhaps ebay may be of some help?

Purchasing it or having it installed through official channels will be prohibitively expensive. Perhaps consider store credit for your iMac purchase (and think of all the mortgage holders as you do so) :P

I had my iMac G5 done under warranty, but the shop stuffed up and tried to charge me $1200, then I explained and they didn't. Getting the logic board replaced only makes sense in a parallel universe.

a typical imac motherboard will cost 900 bucks... then to fit it can be a real pain, just throw it away and buy a new one... cheaper...

Here's a US site that sells them: US $299 to $539 depending on speed. iMac G5 Logic Board : DV Warehouse, Your single source for your all digital video needs! Another US site I checked out had them listed at US $850. Even the cheap ones are expensive.

I feel terrible that none of us thought to ask if you had checked out the Apple repair extension program for this model iMac (which is still running). While we answered your question I feel that we failed to answer it as well as we might have. Apple - Support - iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues

From that page:
Quote:
Affected systems will exhibit one of the following video- or power-related symptoms:

Scrambled or distorted video
No video
No power
Quote:
The program is available for certain first generation iMac G5 models that were sold between approximately September 2004 and June 2005 featuring 17- and 20-inch displays with 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz G5 processors.

The affected iMac G5 computers have serial numbers where the first 5 digits fall into the ranges noted below.

Serial Number ranges:
W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx
QP435xxxxxx - QP522xxxxxx
CK435xxxxxx - CK522xxxxxx
YD435xxxxxx - YD522xxxxxx
