Money / Paypal fraud on Mac

Just purchased my imac 20inch a couple of months ago , not running any antivirus just the OSX firewall and security measures with Leopold and Airport.

Have been using Paypal and other banking services for the last 6 years with Windows on my PC and have never had any fraud happen before . Tonight i had my Paypal account hacked and transactions being taken out worldwide . My banks fraud department is on to it so i will be getting the funds refunded , luckily .

I never respond to fake emails and never give out any personal information out over email . How has this happened and what can i do to stop it happening again. Any antivirus etc i can use ?

Cheers

Man that's scary but what do you mean by name ( forum user name ) ?

Don't remember any emails about expired cards , hope my wife hasn't responded to one .

I would like to ask, if at all possible, could you provide some specifics?

The hacker was able to get a hold of your bank account no./credit card no. from hacking the PayPal site? Or did they get a hold of your log in/password to syphon money?

Have you contacted PayPal, and if so what has been their response?

I'm curious as to whether PayPal is as secure as they say.

EDIT: Does this illegal transaction show in your account activity history?

Don't know yet ? Bank is getting back to me ,and sending out the details for me to sign for my refund.

Paypal has no number to ring and i have put in an unorthaurised transactions complaint with them through the Paypal site but it takes up to 10 days

Terrible news. Let us know how you get on with PayPal.

Does this illegal transaction show in your account activity history? How did you know?

Your wireless is secure, using WPA2? Using WEP is one way transmissions can be intercepted.

The other obvious cause is phishing/ social engineering type tricks, either emails or phone calls, to get information - not necessarily the actual bank account, but identity information that can be used for identity fraud.

Champ , thanks mate .

Jun , i was on the computer when Paypal transaction emails were coming through . I rang the banks fraud department as it was happening and they cancelled the card , while on the phone to them another three transactions were attempted .

The best part , after putting in the dispute with Paypal i got an email from one of the transactions email names threatening me with legal action for putting a conplaint in against them

That doesn't make sense at all - they were threatening YOU with legal action, for using YOUR account illegally?

I have one of these that I use. You need to enter the 6 digit PIN each time you log on.

The hide! How can they threaten legal action against you for stopping them from stealing from you?

I'm interested in following this as my brother had money taken from him through PayPal two years back. I want to know if PayPal has improved their security and resolutions service. In my brothers case the FBI got involved and they caught the guy in Panama.

I was just looking at that on the PayPal site. An interesting concept.

Hold the boat, if you got an email from one of the transactions email names, that would appear as a transaction in your history, no? Their ISP would be logged I would assume?

That suggests to me that they knew your login details and password.
