Tonight i had my Paypal account hacked and transactions being taken out worldwide . My banks fraud department is on to it so i will be getting the funds refunded , luckily .

I never respond to fake emails and never give out any personal information out over email . How has this happened and what can i do to stop it happening again. Any antivirus etc i can use ?

Cheers
Doubt it.

I have one of these that I use. You need to enter the 6 digit PIN each time you log on.

Well she won't be doing that again! But was she allowed to use your account in the first place, do the terms of service for PayPal allow SOs to have access?

Just one other thing on all these security keys.

I know they are cheap now, but if every place that needs you to be secure wants you to end up having one, then won't you have like 2 or 3 or 4 to keep track off?

Yep. I have two business accounts with different banks and have a token for each of them (pretty much look just like the paypal one linked to earlier)

We both use Paypal on the same account or did .
Not anymore , if she wants to use it she has to notify me , she doesn't know the passwords now . Any emails received that are not from friends such as banks , paypal etc she is to show me if i don't see them first, and not reply to any .

Not cool. I've gotta say I got a very convincing email from "paypal" the other day, and it's only because I never trust links in emails that I didn't get done in the same way.

It was that good I actually went to the site, logged in and spent a good five minutes trying to find where to update my credit card..

Scammers can get your full name from various different sources, so I wouldn't consider that a criteria for judging whether an email is genuine or not.

Does PayPal use your name in an email?

EDIT: answered my own question with a Google search -

Questions PayPal will never ask you in an email.

To help you better identify fake emails, we follow strict rules. We will never ask for the following personal information in email:

* Credit and debit card numbers
* Bank account numbers
* Driver's license numbers
* Email addresses
* Passwords
* Your full name

A few weeks ago, I got that credit card expired email from paypal.

The paypal phone number for support was the same on email as their site, paypal aus url typed into a separate window not off email url links

So I rang them that day and they said it was a mistake and nearly every Australian paypal customer received that email. lol

Knew it. The most errors are caused by the space between the chair and the keyboard

Identity Protection is by VeriSign and the little battery operated electronic device generates a random six digit number, different each use, which has been pre-recorded when issued against your account.

After login you get a VeriSign window asking you to press the button and generate a six digit number. Account will not open if number is not correct nor in pre-recorded sequence.
