Nice program, but do Mac Pros' need overclocking at all? If they can figure out how to overclock a mini though...

So tempted to try it, but i don't want to risk it yet. I've got way to much video to edit.

Shit yeah, overclock your CPU & stress it heaps therefore shortening its effective life... we can all afford a buy CPUs everyday, well you possibly can I can't.

With ECC ram i dont think you can do much damage. It will just shutdown, and restart at stock speeds.

400mhz gain over 8 cores seems good, but in the real world it equates to about 10-15% performance increase. Still alot cheaper than purchasing the 3.2ghz MacPro from Apple.

After a bit more reading, its seems there are a few more isues with the ZDnet beta:

They're not using a voltage increase here so electro-erosion doesn't seem to be a problem. Not sure what negative effects frequency overclocking has though.

If I had a Mac Pro i'm not sure i'd try it. Seems too risky for an otherwise expensive machine, and the performance bump is hardly necessary at this stage.

It's pretty harmless - particularly on the Mac Pro as it has excellent cooling. Your fans may run a little louder as the CPUs are generating more heat due.

Just go up in little increments until it crashes, then go down a notch and it should be fine. If you can't get back, just re-install OS X, as this method of overclocking uses kernel extensions to work, it's not physically changing anything.

The beauty of this is that you can switch it on and of or adjust the speed which would be handy if you had to encode some video or similar and then switch it back when you're finished...
