RAM Backwards Compatibility

Question in regard to RAM backwards compatibility.

I know from my work with PC's that DDR RAM in backwards compatible. You can put DDR 400 RAM into a machine that max's out at DDR 333 and it will work. It will just automatically run slower.

Want I want to know is if this is the same for macs.

Would DDR 400/3200 RAM work in my MDD G4 that uses DDR 333/2700 as default?

I don't mind the speed decrease its expected, just want to know if it'll work.

Other thing is I know with some G5's that they are less picky with RAM than previous macs. In some cases where G5's will use common PC Kingston RAM. If the RAM works in a G5, will it work in a G4?

The reason im asking is because DDR 400 RAM is still commonly available and cheap, especially your PC variety Kingston RAM. Especially from places like MSY. However considering how they can be rather tight on exchanges, I want make sure before purchasing.

It'll work a treat - some older Macs using SDRAM can be picky with using RAM rated for higher bus speeds, but Macs using DDR and above can use any good quality RAM rated the same or above specification.

Excellent, thanks for the feedback. Always good to hear from those that have actually tried it first.

So RAM speeds not an issue, is the case of using Kingston RAM or similar also okay?

To be honest I've not hit any major issues using DDR RAM in any Mac - even the generic stuff! But you're better off for longevity and reliability to get something like Kingston.
