G3 imac - is the tray CD drive dead?

The imac G3 in question (belonging to my friend's kids) has started to refuse to recognise CDs of any type, insisting they be formatted. Is the drive dead? I suspect it is....

IN any event, very likely.

Although bit difficult to be absolutely certain unless you replace it and it turns out to be true (ie. newer drive shows no similar signs of the issue as reported).

Guess you really think so too, as you already posted a request for some spares.

Yeah, I'm not optimistic. Just thought I'd ask in case there was some miracle cure....poor old things.... I hate pulling the beasties apart! I only did ours last week, so she thinks I must enjoy it or something!

I wouldn't be too quick to think the drive is dead, I thought mine was dead until I opened it up over 5yrs later and re-seated the connector cable. For awhile I used a USB Iomega CDRW 4x drive(paid $65 at MacWorld NY).

If the drive is truely dead, a USB CDRW drive will fill the gap, parts for tray loaders are expensive & hard to find.

Try and run a lens cleaner in the drive, see if that improves performance.

Thanks, I'll try the lens cleaner.

I have an old HP USB Cd drive from an old PC. Would that work? I gather I would need some sort of drivers....

Try plugging in that USB drive to your Mac then check Apple System Profiler, if it says burning support in the info of the USB device, then it should support OS 9.0.4 too.
