I'm using energy saver light buld in the whole house....
Still, I need to have 2 lights on!
I wish to work in dim light like it is possible with the powerbook that has light in the keyboard so you can work in very low light situations...
Is crazy you cannot do it with the iMac...

The iMac screens are exceptionally bright, yes. To the OP, have you tried an app like Shades: Shades | Software | Charcoal Design
There's also some other ones, but I'm not sure if they're freeware.

I have my cinema display set to the lowest setting, so I think I'd be in the same boat as Antonino Giglio. If I had an iMac. I usually have my MBP set to full brightness though, unless I'm in a dark room at night.

This actually hasn't ever been proven correct (I've read research that suggests it doesn't).

I was talking about this today. I just got my new iMac on Wednesday, and I actually think it's the contrast, not the brightness. The white's are really tacky. And looking at the Dock is like starting at the sun
Pretty peeved.

Ok, could all the people with complaints as to the Whites being too bright, please verify that in Universal Access (preference pane in System Preferences) that the "Enhance Contrast" slider is all the way to the <-Left.

You use to be able to buy films that went over the screen just stayed there due to the stati so when you wanted to remove them from the computer they didnt leave shit on your screen, they were good at reducig bightnes from sceens and reflection on the sceen as well.
nt sure if you can get simular things for the iMac's but think there was a topc a few months ago on here about them worth a search.
I have a new 24" iMac and did sort of hurt my eyes at first. I run almost full brightness but have learnt to use more distance to the sceen,, went from using a laptop to this and use use to peering at the sceen, had to stop myself doing it now sit back a good 70cm (what the oc health ands afty people say is agood distance) and adjusted the font sizes on the computer so they were easy to read at this distance, and every thing is great i love it so good to use

And you have played around with the display calibrator and compared multiple user adjusted settings? I only ask as I have played with multiple settings on LCD's and compared to CRT's in some ways they are vastly inferior. Not all, but some.

I have my imac at the lowest brightness setting. What gets me is that every time I reboot it goes back to full brightness.

My macbook pro, i used to think the same thing, but it auto adjusts, and i like that.
You guys are just being stupid in my opinion. If it really pisses you off that much there is an app that puts a translucent black overlay over everything.

Well I went into Display preferences and it seems you need an external calibrator connected if you want to change the settings. Is this true?
Ricky.

Solartint.com.au ????
Edit: I should say that I have a new iMac on order and reserve the right to retract such a flippant remark.

Actually Ricky they can be alarmingly bright (having then checked one out since I posted my comment). At minimum brightness, in low ambient light and using a white background they are very bright. The 'expert' calibration settings would probably require you to fudge those settings to get the best outcome.
