You'll be pleased to know kim that there exists an Open Firmware patch to allow > 128GB:

I say - and you don't need to wait for the ATA patch to be updated (as was the case when Leopard was released). Can't say I've tried it yet, running the ATA patch on a 400GB drive in my Cube with 10.4.11, but will attempt this when I one day upgrade to Leopard.

Thanks JB. I have to wonder why something that appears so simple took so long to surface when the technology it applies to is up to 7 years+ old?

The only downside is that I am positively phobic when it comes to dealing with the terminal.

I know nothing about terminal but that sounds like a better option.
Is it something I can just cut n paste and hit enter and I'll have a 320gb HD to use.
Any kind soul be willing to give me some Terminal 101 for dummies instructions to try that.
I have OSX10.4 fresh install on the new HD but doesn't matter if it needs to be wiped to get this running.

Just installed HiCap driver and now have a partitioned
HD. 127gb for main OSX boot disk and 170gb for extras.
Don't know where the 20gb has gone from a new 320gb though!

anyway on on.

Me too - but as the link notes you can save the commands in a text file, and when run under Terminal it'll apply the patch. Or, just download the patch they've provided

cactus68: the "lost" 320GB stems from the old hard disk manufacturer misreporting of it's capacity, whereby they state 1000kb = 1MB, not 1024kb = 1MB. Google around and you'll find heaps on this.
