iMac shuts down when I try to wake it from sleep
This has only just started to happen in the last few days...
I've come out in the morning and hit the spacebar to wake the iMac and it initially sounds like it kicks into gear but a second later it is shut down. Nothing ever appears on screen. I then have to press the power button and it starts up normally.
Any ideas as to what is happening and how to fix it??
Thanks guys!

If you disconnect your iMac from the Internet, and then Shutdown and disconnect the power cord for at least 3 minutes, and then plug it back in, does your iMac show the correct Time and Date?

What version iMac do you have?
And are you running Leopard? If so, have you updated to 10.5.2?

It's worthwhile stating what kind of machines you have, guys, bearing in mind there are 27 models of iMac since the first iMac, back to 1998.
ie: I have an " iMac G5 17" 1.8GHz SuperDrive / 160GB HD / 1.5GB RAM - running Mac OS 10.4.11"
It helps...
cheers,
cw

yeah good point CW. I should have given a more detailed run down of it.
I'm at work now... but off the top of my head I have a
early 2005 20" iMac
Running 10.4.something, think .11 -will confirm) but definitely not 10.5
Its never disconnected from the net so I will try that when I get home..
Thanks again.

early 2005 iMac could well be one of the G5s effected by a known power supply issue. check the serial against apple's website - http://www.apple.com/support/imac/po...pairextension/

I had the same problem on my 20" G5 iSight except before it died completely the fans use to ramp up and I would have to try and do a restart.
Turned out to be a dead Logic board, replaced under Apple care ... the first replacement died within 30 mins (DOH!) and the second has been running fine ever since, also found turning off bluetooth (had to go without my wireless Mighty mouse) helped with this issue.... dont know why but it did!
Cheers
Andy

yeah its gone from bad to worse pretty quickly...
It now shuts off half way through boot up. I still get logo and not missing drive or anything.. but now I dont get much further than that.
Off to the mac shop this week. Just over three years old too.

Speed,
Purchased in Late 2005 (assumedly) ?
AppleCare Protection Plan still active?
It sounds like a Power Supply problem. Requires repairs...

nah purchased early 05. It didn't have applecare, (the one mac of mine that didn't) but its just clocked over 3 years anyway...
I'm not used to this 'paying' for repairs business.

have you checked your machine to see if it qualifies for the repair extension programme? It might not cost you anything.

ouch this has got expensive....
Its not covered as its the logicboard not the power supply apparently....
comes to a wopping $1350!!!!!!!1
I was really hoping this iMac would last longer than that... its just the communal family internet/email/photos machine. I really didnt want to think about replacing it.
Question: If its the logicboard, is it possible to recover data?
I do have backups, using 'Backup' but if I can get the last weeks stuff that would be good. Although I'm not that worried, PROVIDED THE BACKUPS WORK!!!!!!

Even if it were the Power Supply, that would be the logic board also - it's all one piece.
Yet the Hard Drive is separate, and once the logic board has been replaced, you should find that everything on the HD is exactly how you left it.
