 I'd like to connect an older eMac to one of the new (yet, unpurchased) eMacs.
The older eMac will accept the older 11Mbps Airport, and the newer eMac requires the newer 54Mbps Extreme. I'd like these two eMacs to communicate, computer-to-computer, without the use of an Apple Base-Station (or any other 3rd-party wireless router). I appreciate that the speed will be capped at 11Mbps (or, more likely, 2Mbps through my 2 brick walls).

Does anyone here have *experience* using Airport-to-Extreme connections (not that'd they'd just read about it somewhere)?

 If it is possible, how is Apple, legally, able to get away with statements on their website that the Base-Station is *required*?

Thanks,

The method for connecting is called "ad-hoc" where you're not going through a base station. The setup would be the same for a wired network. You'd be configuring Airport instead of Ethernet.

In the Airport settings, you can create an ad-hoc network on a machine quite easily. The other machine will find this network with no problems. Then you just have to file share as usual.

Major file transfers will be slow though...if you have to move alot in one go, just grab an ethernet cable and do it that way.

But make sure you are using a Crossover Ethernet cable, not a regular one. As this will not get you anywhere.

Then again, I could be wrong, Maybe Apple has implimented the same technology used in Routers that can detect is the cable is crossover or regular Cat5/5e/6 whatever.

Yes, Apple also supports technology so that you don't need a cross-over cable.
But how did we get from my question about wireless networks, to this?

Will this work between a Mac using OS X and one using OS 9?

I can't think of any reason why not, but can't seem to get my wife's iMac (OS 9) talking to my B&W G3 (OS X) properly. They seem to be able to see one another, but getting access to one another's HDDs is a problem.

All suggestions warmly welcomed.
