Extended / external display?

Is it possible to extend the desktop on my G5 iMac with a second monitor rather than just mirror it?

I've got a tiny problem with this program, which you might want to consider:
You are actually changing the firmware of the computer and hence void your warranty, if you still got any left.

There is an Apple Script around, which does not play with the firmware, and hence you don't void the warranty.

I've got it running on an emac and an Ibook G4 and it runs like a bewdy.

should also be running on an imac g5

it can be downloaded here:

hope that helps

it wouldnt work on my emac. the second display just shook out all the time and flicked on and off. if it can work solidly for you that would be awesome... good luck.

Just as an update, as the last post in this thread was in May...

Does anyone know if this works with the new (frontrow/isight) iMacs?

Thanks,
Z

From the website:

Update 11/14/04

iMac G5 and new iBooks

Apple released the all new iMac G5 a couple month ago and by now it's been shipped to many customers.

At this time I would like to announce that it is confirmed that the new iMac G5 can do screen spanning after being patched with Screen Spanning Doctor.

EDIT: Just realised the update was from 2004.... my bad.

Would it be reasonable to assume that if it worked with the previous model iMacs, that there is a good chance it will work with the current ones?

I'd say it would work... They can't have changed that much that it wouldn't work.

If your LCD TV has a VGA input, you need the MiniDVI to VGA cable. If your LCD TV has DVI you need the MiniDVI to DVI cable. If the LCD TV has HDMI input, you need a MiniDVI to DVI cable and a DVI to HDMI cable.

If you have a MiniDVI port on your iMac yes.

I don't know if they have MiniDVI or DVI.... but yes the adapter will do the trick.

It will also do WXGA too

ha!! Thanks guys.
Now thats got me bit more intrigued, YES my TV does have HDMI input as well as VGA. I just didnt know there was a DVI -> HDMI adapter/cable. So Which one should i go for to get best picture? miniDVI to VGA or miniDVI to DVI and then DVI to HDMI ? Ofcourse i know HDMI is great picture and all, but i mean will it really matter coming out of my iMac no matter how its converted? Its a 32" LCD, and my iMac is the 2.4Ghz 20" version with ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory.

I don't know much about it, but this is my advice:

Ignore VGA. Too old, poor signal.
Go for DVI if you just want the video/clean digital signal.
Go for HDMI if you need the above (DVI) + a clean audio signal.

Maybe I'm wrong (correct me if I am guys) but that's what I think.

Cheers Huy. I'm not fussed about Audio one single bit since audio is going straight out of my iMac into Studio monitors. Main reason i'm using this 32" is the large screen provision for Logic. See more tracks and more of each track on a single screen.
