Yep, I have a BW G3 running a broadcom chipset wireless pci card too on 10.4. No drivers required, no problems.

I think you'll find Bartron is looking to confirm with manufacturer/model card your using that has a broadcom chipset that works like an airport card under 10.4 (without the need to install drivers or hack it to work).

Any chance those with working wireless cards can name the brand/model, although I am sure those brands/models has since been revised and no longer use broadcom chipsets. It's been a long running problem for Linux users.

woah...that thread is even older than this one....good resource though.

If the cosensus is that pretty much any broadcom chipset will work then I'll just pick up a cheap one from dick smith or something, however if it is only 'some' broadcom devices that work then knowing what revisions do work would be a good thing.

I think the only broadcom based cards around cost $60 - $70 when I was looking about 2 weeks ago. I was looking for my G5, so I decided it was easier just to get an airport express card. Granted this is not a solution for sawtooths (sawteeth?) but it may be worth bearing in mind.

If you do find a cheap broadcom based card post about it though!

Cost me $50 on eBay. Model number is W54-PCI

Chipset details I will look at the card when the G4 isn't being used

I recently Purchased an Asus WL-138G (v2) from MSY (Got it for my PC)

To my surprise it uses a Broadcom chipset; Tried it in the tired old B&W G3 in the lounge; worked perfectly

Thank you for this thread.

I might be coming into a G4 and so this could be useful information for me as I do not have wired network at home.

I was wondering about my options as well for wireless internet on a G4, specifically 802.11g.

The ASUS WL-167G USB dongle would be the easiest to obtain, although you'd need USB2 ports to attain 'g' speeds. It's pretty hard now to find a compatible PCI card that can be purchased at your local PC store and thrown into a Mac with full support.

Thanks very much Byrd. I do not believe that the older G4's have USB 2.0 ports so I will test out PCI cards.

I have a Netgear WG311 in a PC that I can try out. From the website given above it says WG311T which is the "Super-G" version.

The WG311 is just the regular "G" version which I'm hoping will work just the same under 10.4.

Plug that baby in - it should come up straight away as an Airport card without any software required

Hi Byrd

I just installed the WG311 and the AirPort icon does not show and is not recognised under Tiger 10.4.11.

(I just got this PowerMac G4 Quicksilver/733MHz today).

I shut down. Opened her up. Put the card in the PCI slot (furthest away though I don't think this matters) and then booted her up.

The (single) LED on the network card is not on ("LINK") and I have tried another PCI slot as well.

"No information found" under Airport Card.

I have tried 3 out of 4 PCI slots now. I'm not going to try the last one. Maybe this card doesn't work with Tiger...
