New iMac's first problem! (2.8g ver)

Hey guys,
Just thought to pass this on, today for the first time since new, I've been having issues with my new iMac (24"/2.8g/500g....2 weeks old).
This began after I installed today's Apple Software Update for the alu 20 & 24 iMacs.
All of a sudden it wouldn't stay on for more than a couple of minutes without crashing...spinning coloured ball, mouse still moved but everything else was frozen.
Repaired permissions (there were quite a few repaired), still crashed every couple of minutes.
Did the startup hardware test...all passed ok
Still crashed every few minutes, and by this stage I'm getting very frustrated coz the iMac wouldn't even hang together near long enough for me to back up my stuff to attempt a clean install.
Finally tracked down an article that mentioned the PRAM reset trick....so I did that about 45 minutes ago and so far so good, it hasn't crashed since.
Just to be on the safe side I'm in the midde of backing up my files across 3 x DVD's just in case it does start hanging again and I have to resort to a fresh install!

Dave

OK then.....typing this back on the iMac, it's been back up & running fine now for about an hour & half. Got my backups burnt to DVD with no problems, fingers crossed that everything's back to normal......going to go fire up a WOW session and see if that's stable.

Bugger....seems I spoke too soon. 2 x crashes this morning both requiring a hard reset.
AFAIK the 1.1 update included updates to the gfx drivers....I think for me they're a step backwards, I wish I hadn't installed it.
WOW still runs, but worse. I'm running it at full rez with all detail and I was getting a consistent 30-35fps which is plenty smooth for me. Now after the software update in outside areas of the game I'm getting a choppy 20fps...only goes back up to 30+fps inside small indoor areas.
I may just bite the bullet & re-install OSX....hopefully another update becomes available before then

You might want to check out the crash log for the system first to find out what the cause is before re-installing. If it was a kernel panic (brings up the "please press your power key for 10 seconds" thing) then it'll be /Library/Logs/panic.log.

Well I've done a complete fresh install....downloaded & installed all the Software Updates EXCEPT the 1.1 iMac 20/24 update.....I think I'll leave that one alone for the time being.
So far so good....hasn't crashed once, unlike earlier today when it was crashing every couple of minutes!
