Grey screen of death.....

Hi there people.

I was watching a move tonight then every thing got a bit jumpy then froze.

Turned it off then turned it on again, but hello it will not boot. Just the grey apple screen of death.

I have tried using the OSX cd for the star disk install but still nothing.

Anyone got anything further to suggest before I send it away for six weeks to get repaired?

Cheers

Further info, I have run the disk utility from the install disk and it fails the verify & repair disks with a "invalid sibling link"

Hi Crackers,

what Mac do you have?

Sounds like your hard disk is on it's way out - hope you've got everything backed up (twice). Get hold of a copy of Diskwarrior which will do a better job of repair, but it's likely things will get worse from here until the drive is replaced.

Hi JB

I have a 24" iMac. Only 6 months old.

I have tried all I can think off what the apple service people suggested. Still no boot.

I have it backed up but the last back up was two days ago, and as usual there are two files that I need so I am going to try and get the info off before giving it to apple tomorrow.

It sounds more like a corrupted or missing file in the system this happen when 10.4.10 came out. If you have or can get another mac with firewire boot into target disk mode and recover your data.

DiskWarrior may or may not be able to fix the issue. You could also via TD Mode try re-installing the 10.4.10 combo updater it may allow booting again.

The current version of disk warrior is rev. 41 this would be the best to use if available.
