Again, depends on your point of view. It's not a DVD player, it's not an HDDVD or Bluray player. It's an Airport Express for your TV, that's how I've always used it and that's how I'll continue to use it. I've got a PS2 and a DVD player to watch DVDs with if I really want to.

this is gouging pure and simple.
The upgrade for the iPhone is far less extensive than for the touch - no new apps, it had all of them before, it just gets upgraded OS and bug fixes (if you don't want the enhanced finctions for your touch you can just install the free 1.1.3 update, just like the one for the iPhone. The $25 is optional for those who feel they want or need the new apps for their touch). The touch is getting five whole new apps that do new things that were previously unavailable on that h/w (but the hardware itself is unchanged, no 32GB touch model or anything was announced).

Again, these new apps do much more function-wise than the wifi update did, they "add more value", therefore Apple charge more for them.

I viewed it as 5 apps for $5 an app...had I not wanted Mail and Notes and only upgraded to a gimped 1.1.3, I'd be just as pissed off.

I wish Apple had just given us 1.1.3 complete, and then added the 5 apps to the iTunes store so we could buy them individually. I have no need for weather, stock or Google Maps so I wouldn't have bothered buying them.
Take it up with US congress and get them to either change or clarify the law in this area.

1.1.3 IS free, you only pay the $25 if you want the extra apps. They are separate installs.

The 5 new apps are added to the iTunes Store, they just aren't offered individually which I agree is a pity; but hey, I've been complaining about exactly the same thing re iLife since it came out - I only want iPhoto, why do I have to pay for and get all this other junk I don't want?

That's not what some people have said. They say that they can't customize the home screen etc in 1.1.3 after the upgrade without paying the $25 which to me is a problem.

Edit: And it's not up to me to take it up with the US Congress, I'm not a US citizen.

I'm trying to buy the update now, the iTunes store isn't processing payments at this time... a sign?

I gotta admit, if it weren't for the SDK coming in Feb, I'd keep the jailbroken 1.1.1. I need the notes app, and I'd prefer that it sync with Mail without 3rd party apps, so I can justify the $25... just. Still not happy Jan.

Why are a number of people posting here wishing to sit on both sides of the fence? If you don't think $25 is a reasonable price to pay, for whatever reasoning you choose to berate Apple's business or legal decision, that don't spend your $25. Apple is not holding a gun to your head to buy these apps. If, for you, they are not worth it, then why buy them?

Sorry, I don't know where to "find" them via iTunes, but if you've downloaded 1.1.3, then you already have the apps installed. The $25 fee pays to unlock them (i.e. you can have them on your disk for free, wanted or not!).

I wonder if the new/updated apps have a runtime check for 1.1.3, and if they refuse to run on earlier firmware??

Can I not be upset at having to pay for something that has always been a feature for iPhone users?

For me, the cost to upgrade was much more pronounced as it was announced in between free updates to other Apple models (AppleTV, iPhone). The other part of the problem is that it's not only the five apps you're paying for - it's the reshuffling of the home screen, webclips, things that were implied to be part of the 1.1.3 firmware update.

I'm not sitting on both sides of the fence, I'm expressing frustration. I want these apps, I use them currently in the jailbroken 1.1.1. I'm simply surprised and disappointed that I have to pay for them in 1.1.3.

Go to the apple site in your browser. Navigate to the 'See what's new' page (http://www.apple.com/au/ipodtouch/whatsnew.html), then click the 'Buy Now' button under the left hand column's 'Have an iPod touch without the new software?' box.

For people who are lost, trying to find the iPod touch apps, go to the online Apple Store and choose 'Shop iPod' (left hand side of the screen). The link is under the 'now there's even more to touch' tab, middle of the page.

OR, just follow this link: https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/...uchLandingPage

Edit: Or do what gmask says. You'll get there either way.

The more I see Apple TV, the more I think of it as an Apple cash deposit machine.

They deliberately leave out any features that wouldn't get people to purchase stuff off Itunes store. No optical drive, no TV tuner as this would entail free entertainment. Force them to spend 90% of their time though in Itunes movies/tv shows/music and the cash registers will keep ringing.

Finally managed to make iTunes accept my money

Looking at the Apple forum, there seems to be some issues with getting the unlock authority from iTunes to the Touch while the sync setting is Manual. I had the same problem, and only a restore and auto sync seemed to get the permissions set. This seems to work for others encountering a similar problem. The iTunes transfer bar says 'Syncing Applications' or some such when things work correctly.

Bullshit.

I have an AppleTV and have never purchased a single video from the iTunes store. I've converted all my purchased DVD's to video to run off of the AppleTV because that's convenient for me.

It serves one type of content and serves it bloody well in my opinion! What is it with you guys? Why the hell does everything have to have an optical drive in it and fullfill every possible need?! Christ, get a Windows MCE PC, that does everything you want in a spectacularly mediocre way...yes, I've used em, I built and fought with one for 6 months before giving up and getting a Mini.

OK, if you need another explanation as to why this is reasonable, even if unpalatable, consider it this way.

Perhaps the iPhone was iniitially released at a value of, say $600, and that included the price of these applications. Now, for those purchasers who have always paid for those apps, their upgrade is free.

Now consider the original price of the 'Touch of, say $400 - should really have been $425 if it included the apps, but to keep its price down and to keep a market distinction between the two products, the apps were not provided.

Now, Apple decides to drop the 'Touch price by $75 but still not provide the apps. Hmmm, Apple's customers are screaming for these apps on their 'Touches. OK, let''s make the price drop just $50 and provide the new apps "for free"!!! There, Apple announces a price drop on the new machines, includes the apps "for free" on new machines, and still charges everybody for the apps. Apple's legal department is happy and the customers are none the wiser as to how all these prices get set anyway

Well, I now have lyrics support on my touch, and a nice shiny MacTalk icon on my home screen to take me straight to the front page. I'm quite happy!
