New Mac Mini has DVR-K06 drive

Just got my new Mac Mini C2D 2GHz.
I was amazed to see the Mac Mini has a Pioneer DVR-K06.
This means it can be made region-free, well not region-locked after 5 changes.
Previous Mini had the usual Matsushita that cannot have the firmware upgraded.

I was under the impression that all dvd players had to be region locked?
Do you have to get a hack of some sort to change it more than 5 times or is it just like that?

Ricky.

Anyone have a reliable source for these drives (hopefully around the $100 mark)? Thinking of putting one in my Mini.

I wonder how much a tech would charge to do it - I'm not sure if I want to butcher my computer.

Yes. Let me ask around.

Edit:
If your superdrive was to 'fail', under warranty Apple would only replace with part according to Mac Mini model you have.
If you were to request Apple supply and fit the K06, by part number it would be more than double the cost elsewhere.
