Smile Writing dual layer dvds

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone can help me, i have a Dual 2 GHz powerPc G5 with a
Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D.

I would like to know if i can write dual layer 8.7 G dvds with this writer. I have searched in vain on the net.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Google it.
Apparently you can use firmware to change it into a dual layer.

Hi guys.

Thanks for your response. Its been really helpful. Im a bit sceptical to use the firmware though, due to warranty issues... maybe ill build up the courage soon! lol.

I take it System Profiler didn't tell you that it was a DVD-DL burner then... if it didn't then it isn't (I believe that is how it goes).

iPirate, it's crippled by Apples crappy 117D firmware.

As soulman said the forum search will show that we've gone over this question several times.

The firmware flash will take about 5 minutes to do (including time for reading of all instructions). And as Jeremy says it's a maximum of a $40 loss for an improved DVD drive in the unlikely event that the firmware update to the drive craps out, and 10 minutes maximum to install it.
