10m old demo Mac

Bought a run-out Mac Mini 1.83ghz SD with 512 mb for $799 on impulse yesterday. It was a demo and the last in stock at a Sydney city department store.

It turns out it was registered in November last year (presumably by the store) and was built in October 06. I have spoken to Apple who say it is totally up to the reseller. The bloke at the store i spoke to was non committal and argued that it had not had a hard life in the store. I am uncomfortable about a supposedly new machine that has possibly been operating for the last 9 months

I will be returning it tomorrow to try to get credit on either a new revision machine, my money refunded or a price reduction. Do I have any rights in a situation like this?

Also, did the Mini revision just replaced have 1Gb of RAM?

You said it was a demo machine, from what you're telling us - the guy also said it was a demo machine... why are you complaining about it not being a new machine, when it seems like you were aware it was a demo machine? I don't get it?

As you've bought it, I think it's up to the seller now if they want to give you a refund. Refunds usually only for faulty goods and I don't think the seller is obliged to give you a credit note or change for something else just because you chose the wrong thing. However you may have a case 'cause it's a demo. Normally a credit note is given out of good will so at least you get use of your money and no loss of sale to them. If it wasn't registered until Nov 06, why don't you just extend the warranty and this'll give you peace of mind for it being a demo..? Also, even if it was bought by a home user, it may have had equal if not more use than at the shop I would've thought..? You could phone Fair Trading (or equivalent in your state) and check seller obligations with them or just see what the seller says in d first instance.

As long as they made clear to the OP that it was a demo I don't see a problem.

If they tried to pass it off as a 'run-out' special then that's a different matter.

see the line including the words "..on impulse". It's a shocking thing but consumerism makes us do stuff like that.

It'd be a bummer to think it was 'on' for 24-7 for the last 9 mnths, but hopefully they power-down at the end of each day. Then it'd only be gettin' normal kinda use.

I clearly knew it was demo machine. I am just a little shocked at how old it was. That is about 260 on/off cycles assuming it was turned off each day. What is that going to do the machines lifespan?

How long should a store keep a demo? No more than 3 months in my opinion. It just strikes me as bad management to keep a demo machine that long.

It was the last of that model in stock. They said they had sold 3 others for the same price.

Really, if you cannot answer my questions or offer anything vaguely constructive, don't bother
posting.

On impulse or not, I don't see an issue. Clearly it was a demo as the poster said. What makes him think demo doesn't mean used at some point.

Poster should have asked for Applecare to be thrown in and then it would of been a decent enough buy (even if it is a previous generation.

Agree with Purana on this one.

Its not uncommon for stores to keep demo machines for that long, considering the Mac Mini has not really been updated in that amount of time. If purchased from Apple as a demo machine (ie cheaper price), stores can't sell them until they have been "revved" or for one year (which ever comes first). The last rev was September 06.......food for thought.

It's going back. These big stores tend to be fairly liberal with returns.

Myer is Australia’s leading department store and we are committed to excellence in retailing. Customer satisfaction is an integral part of this commitment.

This is reflected in our Returns Policy and means that you can shop at Myer with confidence knowing that we can offer you repairs, exchanges and refunds.

For your convenience, our merchandise may be exchanged or returned at any Myer store.
With proof of purchase

If you are able to provide satisfactory proof of purchase, Myer may offer you a repair, exchange or refund on most merchandise. Refunds will be given using your original payment method.

If you have simply changed your mind, Myer may offer you a refund or exchange provided that the product is in as new condition and the refund or exchange is sought within a reasonable period of time.

If you believe an item is faulty, we may need to send the item to the manufacturer for assessment to determine whether or not you are entitled to an exchange, refund or repairer.
Thanks for the opinions.

Demo machines are generally turned over once every 3- 5 months, but sometimes we forget.

We had a 23" Display that was 14 months old when it sold.

If it was purchased as a 'demo', and not just a unit pulled from stock, it would have come with an 18 month warranty, thus giving the store 6 months with the unit, and still selling with full warranty.

Wanted a Superdrive. I'll never buy another machine with a combo.
