I'm scared using my battering andhaving the power plugged in will shorten thel ife of my battery.
So i use it with the battery out and just the power in. Is this safe and is it good for my machine? Getting worried now. I always accidentally pull the power out will the machine is still on. Naughty me ^^;

ah, the consensus seems to be that you are better off keeping the electrons moving in your battery. If you were to use the iBook without the battery, it would still be worth using it on battery once every couple of weeks just so the battery still had power running through it. I think jjust leaving Li-I batteries in storage is a bad idea.

I phoned Apple about this very question.
The advice i was given was to keep the battery in the iBook at all times, even if you are using electricity.
However, i was also told that you should use the iBook off the battery (that is, not plug it in to the power point) about once a month.
I've been doing that since, and it seems to be going well.

when using main power on ibook (any laptop) I believe when full charge is reached , the circuit automatically switches to continue using main power and cuts out the supply to the battery! with the battery fully charged main power will be the priority source if laptop is connected to AC every time the machine is switched on. This way you won't be using the battery even if it's attatched to the computer. It is advisable though that you use the "battery" 2-3 times a month to replenish it's charging cycles and keep it working 100%!
:-)

hmm...i've been leaving my battery on all this while, and use it with or without the powercord regularly, however, after 6 months, by battery life has nearly halved (from 6 to about 3 nowadays). does AppleCare cover batteries as well?

downsys do you ever charge your battery to full and then run it to completely empty?
If not then do this a few times to reset the chip in the battery. It might have more charge but just be reporting 3 hours because the chip is out of sync with the actual charge levels.

I don't think the ibooks have ever had a full 6hr charge as apple states (maybe in sleep mode)! Most reviews have noted that the full charge on a new ibook is around 4.5hrs, which I think is the standard. Try and fully discharge and recharge your battery twice a month, to get the optimal lifespan of charging cycles!
:-)

can we do this on the pbook as well? having only the main power plug, not using the battery? or only ibook can perform this?
Chocho "when using main power on ibook (any laptop) I believe when full charge is reached , the circuit automatically switches to continue using main power and cuts out the supply to the battery! " interesting; thank's for the tips Chocho

Another problem with using it without a battery is apparently condensation on the battery contacts when the machines off and cools down. Don't know much about this but recall reading it last year when I was thinking of doing the same...

Yeah, any laptop benefits from charging and discharging...
Any other device does too - your Palm, your cellphone... etc etc..
