TV Out on MacPro

Short of ponying up for a X1900XT, is there any way to get TV out happening with the macpro ?

PC 7300GT's commonly come with S-Video, though the mac ones are two DVI's only. A mate of mine would like to be able to output to his older TV, but other than the TV-out has no real use for the extra power of the X1900XT

I had a poke around and couldn't find any posts on this, so i'm putting it to you

Would you be able to flash a standard PC 7300GT and have the TVout work? Is there any other solution that's possible?

You can obtain an adapter for the X1900XT.. but not it appears for the 7300GT.

Thanks

You could install any PCI-E graphics card with TV-out functionality, and it'll work ... under native Windows only. You can even get another PCI-E 7300 and SLI it with your existing graphics card ... under native Windows only

Many new TVs have some sort of DVI/VGA input that might be suitable with the proper adapter, and SVideo-->VGA adapter boxes exist but they're generally poor quality and I reckon you'd come into problems using a DVI-->VGA--->Svideo adapter all at once.

The other option is to save for a X1900XT, or wait and see if anyone comes up with a hacked EFI firmware solution to make a generic PCI-E graphics card work under OS X.

The place to check this is:

Mikey: You cannot flash a gneric-PC video card for use in a Mac Pro and expect Mac OS X to make use of it (yet).

Your mate would be best served by this HandView VGA Converter availavle from Jaycar for A$99.95.

Click the image to open in full size.

It is universal (it doesn't require any drivers) and is designed to work as a pass-through device, but if you pop a DVI-to-SVGA adaptor on the second DVI plug of the 7300GT and hook up the HandView to that, you can feed the S-Video signal into a suitable TV set, VCR or video-switchbox and turn the TV set into a second display for your Mac Pro.

the dvi-i out on your mac pro (and mine) contains RGB analogue pins, there is a device kicking around that will convert it to composite (ie RGB) for your newer TV, my sony has it on it. i was going to buy the cables but never could be bothered.

Apple's $25 (or whatever it costs) DVI -> S-Video/composite adaptor is the go, but it uses one of your DVI outputs.

Yeah, I had one of those on my G5 tower and it worked really well. I used to hook it up to my DV camera to make movies in WoW and edit them with iMovie.

Have you used it ? The apple support site specifically says that you can only use it with the second port of the X1900XT

Brains - that looks like it might be a goer, thanks for the heads up

Interesting that the pci-e adapter would work under windows.. that might solve the problem some of the time, but it's no permanent solution.

Will point him in the direction of the themacelite forum also.

Thanks! 8)
