G3 400Mhz vs G4 400Mhz

Would the G4 offer a substantial performance gain?

depends on the application... broadly it will be faster.

If the application supports altivec it will make a major impovement. iTunes is one such program.

If i remember correctly VLC wont play divx / xvid etc on a G3.. but fine on a G4... thanks to altivec.

Also depends on what Mac OS your going to be running on it but for OS X get a new as you can the G4 will give you huge performance gain over the G3 because of these.
- Agp 2x graphics card where as the G3 has just a 66Mhz PCI
- Ability of up to 2Gb Ram where as the G3 is only 1Gb

and overall the G4's were much more reliable than the G3's.

The G4's usually have a faster system-bus as well. Because OSX loves gobs of RAM to play in, it has to shunt a lot of data around, so the speed of the system bus makes quite a difference. A G3/400 on a 100 MHz bus will feel faster than a G4/100 on a 66 MHz bus.

Also, you can coax a little more life out of a G4 machine as there's a better choice of alternative CPU upgrades you can drop in.

It's definitely the better investment.

How ac? G3s run cool, overclock well (compared to a G4 of the same clock speed) and are as "reliable" as any other Power PC.

In my opinion there isn't a significant difference. Try and get a higher spec G4 then you will notice a difference
