iMac 20" G5 iSight vs Current 20" iMac

Hi All

We have a 20" G5 iSight iMac and are wanting to get the current iMac, now my hubby wants to know before he gives in to me what the speed/performance differences will be.

Can anyone tell me or point me to a sight that has this sort of benchmarking info?

Cheers

It should be more than twice as fast when you are using applications that take advantage of both processor cores on the new machine.

Even applications that use one core will still be somewhat faster than your current G5, though not by such a spectacular margin.

I used to own a dual 2.0Ghz G5 tower. I replaced it with a 2.16ghz 20" iMac, and the iMac is faster and better in every way. In fact, in some tasks my iMac is as fast as a dual 2.7Ghz G5 tower.

Having said that, at the moment I would hold of on buying an iMac, as within the next few months it may well be updated, and although a current 20" iMac will be faster than your G5 model, the other features such as the iSight and the screen are going to be exactly the same, so perhaps it won't feel like much of an upgrade to you.

Oh.. just realised you have a macbook pro. I'd imagine that should give you a feel for the intel iMac, as the intel iMac has the internals of a laptop, except for the screen and harddisk.

Thanks for your info - our MBP was the very first one that came out (insurance replacement for the powerbook - which we still have after a drop) and to be honest I never felt it was that much faster, but it did have less ram.

Are looking to have 3GB ram and upgrade the video card in the iMac, so that would make a difference...and also not sure about waiting for the sometime in the next few months upgrade. We always seem to get the Rev A version of machines over the last few years.

This for a first rev imac core duo vs a Quad core G5 but there is a benchmark for a G5 imac in there.

I want a new iMac too as I have the rev A iMac G5 and am waiting for the new designs and speeds which are rumored to be not too far off.

Might just wait a bit...its not like we are desperate...only now that I am back at work after maternity leave got some extra cash again

And what better to spend it on than a new iMac (after my son that is) but time for a toy for mummy.
