Ok guys forgive the dumb questions of a newbie.

I am a long term Windows user thinking about making a Mac Mini purchase. I would like to beef memory up to 1 GB but paying the Apple price of $650 seems outrageous. Is it possible to buy ( and install) non-Apple memory? Is it too early to ask that question? Who supplies such memory in Australia? Who would install it for me?

Hey there,

Apparrently it is possible to user-install RAM in the Mac mini - although there seems to be mixed info going around about this lately. I think the initial consensus was that it wasn't but that was later confirmed to be untrue.

As for where to buy, try http://www.msy.com.au (pc supplier). They should have some good quality ram for a decent price.

Just make sure you get PC2700 or PC3200 DDR and it will work fine.

If you do get the Mac Mini, I'm sure you won't be disappointed with it!

I wish the Mac Mini had a second RAM slot, or we had cheap 2GB sticks of RAM around, would be sweet!

Quote:
5. Memory upgrade must be performed by an Apple Authorised Service provider.
This is listed on the bottom of the tech specs page for the mac mini on apples website

http://www.apple.com.au/macmini/specs.html

Basically meaning, if you open your mac mini to perform any sort of upgrade, ram, hard drive, airport extreme card, etc, and you crack the case or break something, then you are NOT going to be covered by applecare.

I would advise that when you make a purchase of a mac mini, and you want the 1GB upgrade, then do not buy it directly from apples website, resellers will be offering the 1GB upgrade for a fraction of apples price. You should be able to get the upgrade to 1GB at under the $400 mark.

There is still a bit of confusion as to whether user performed upgrades will void the warranty on the Mac Mini.

Australian warranty law aside, the Mac Mini knowledge base says this:
Quote:
Additional memory should be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
It doesn't say it MUST be installed by an Apple dude/dudette.

Anyway if you're interested in the memory on a Mac Mini here is the relevant URL: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300572

Technically no, it does not need to be done by an apple service rep. however, if anything goes wrong with the RAM, Ram slot etc. they might be able to argue that it was your fault... But then again, if you install it and anything goes wrong you can just say to the service agent that you had it installed by an apple rep... you shouldn't have to give them details. Just stick to your story...

You're allowed to crack it open. If you break something you lose your warranty - nothing new or different here.

The only trick is having the right tool, same as the iPod cracker apparently, the change of breaking one of those tabs
