Guys i am a bit confused about this whole Airport extreme base station thing.
What is it exactly? Is it a router only or is it a router + ADSL modem combo?
Secondly, I need to set up a broadband connection at home. So if i get the Airport extreme base station would i still need to get a ADSL Modem?
Another things is that there are two types of base stations available- One with a modem and antena port and the other with Power over Ethernet and UL 2043. Whats the difference between the two?
And lastly if i need to get a seperate modem with the base station what do u guys reckon is a good idea. to go for one of the airport extreme base stations( After understanding the diff between the two) or say a netgear ADSL modem and router combo?

PLEASE ADVISE

The Airport Extreme Base Station is a wireless router, and some models have a built in DIAL UP modem.

You'll have to supply your own DSL modem to connect to it.
I use a Billion 5100 DSL modem through my Airport Extreme Base Station. I can't complain.

its a router.
you will still need a modem.
Power over ethenet just means it sends power and data thru an ethernet cable
it means if you have 2 or more connected they supply power to each other

So if i have to set a home network then i should get the base station with the modem and antenna port right? I dont think i would need the power over internet feature?

Plenty of answers/suggestions for that in this thread.

I bought a Belkin wireless ADSL modem/router yesterday and 1 wireless card for a PC using XP, it took about 10 minutes to install the card and set up the modem and get it all working, I wish everything was as easy as this !!

The whole lot only cost me $270, from what I know the Airport Extreme is around $300 by itself

Yes, in the current climate of ADSL modems with built in routers and wireless antennas, the Airport Extreme Base Station is kind of an expensive redundant solution.
I have the same setup as Disko (Billion Adsl > Airport BS), and I guess one 'advantage' is the base station configuration application which is installed on every mac. It also has an external antenna port which I don't use.

We got the base station ages ago, long before the cool Airport Express.

Hi.

I'd recommend the Airport Express. If you don't need more than 10 concurrent connections (and lets face it, we are at home..) thhen it works extremely well.

I have a Dynalink modem connected (free from Ozemail, just as well as recent storm blew up my Cisco 827) and it works excellently.

Also benefits of iTunes compatibility, which I have used with no issues on occasion. My XP and Win2K PC's also connect in no worries, one with Belkin NIC, other with DLink.

Got from DJ's for $190 on sale.

As dopus said - i'd recommend the Airport Express aswell.

I have Airport express running to two macs (p'book & iMac) providing adsl internet, and also sharing a usb printer for both computers. I use a Netcomm NB1300 Plus 4 adsl modem and it has been great (so far!). About $100 from memory.

Adsl is through internode, which seem to get a good wrap on the forums I checked before deciding on a provider, and I have been very happy with them aswell. I was setup for adsl within a week from applying, to using - all in the week before christmas!!

The whole setup process with Airport is very easy, coming from having stumbled through a few networking setups on PC's, it was an absolute walk in the park!

i'm still amazed at how well this whole setup works and how easy it is to use!!
