Using mac mini as PVR?

Hello, I'm a total Apple newbie, but recently I've been wanting to get a PVR to connect to Foxtel, and one of my friends mentioned that I might as well get a Mac Mini as it would be around the same price but could do so much more.

I would love to do this, as I rather like the idea of getting a Mac system in the bargain to play with and learn, but I just wanted to know whether anyone else has done this (or indeed could it be done?)

I know nothing about Macs at all, and was also wondering whether I would need to get the newest model at apple.com at the moment for it all to work or whether I could get away with buying a 2nd hand system.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't know about watching / recording Foxtel. But I use my Mac Mini G4 1.42ghz with an EYETV Digital turner to watch and record local TV and VLC etc to watch content from Channel BT.

I also use my Mini 1.25ghz at work on the projector to display and watch content. They're a great machine. If you have the money get a new Mac Mini, if not, look for a second hand one (although they're hard to find) lots of Want to Buy threads on here for a Mini...

As with Hawker, not sure about watching or recording Foxtel.

I use a Mac Mini as a HT for watching and recording FTA TV + DVD's + Channel BT. I'm using an intel mini and I'm happy with it.

If you want to record foxtel then you would need something like an EyeTV Hybrid - http://www.streetwise.com.au/product...oducts_id=4953

Just curious iSlayer, why this unit rather than the diversity?

Is it something to do with analogue signals?

I thought Foxtel was also available as digital now?

Only if you buy the digital set top box and service.

He probably just pointed to it because it's cheap, and I think you're only going to get it as an analogue signal, I don't think it has a digital output. Although I could be wrong!

EyeTVs cant pick up Foxtel signals. They can only get free to air digital signals. You need to get an anologue one and then hook up the output of your foxtel box to it.

A Mac Mini might not be the best choice for recording Foxtel... it'll work, but requires a fair bit of effort. Here's some related threads:

New EyeTV Hybrid
EYETV Your thoughts? Feedback?
Mac Mini and USB Tv Tuners (Foxtel and HDTV)

I have a Mac Mini as a PVR here... works brilliantly, but I only record free to air TV.

Mac mini's are great!
I use one with a Sony Bravia X HD LCD TV and Eye TV.

A mate of mine runs Foxtel through his - but I'd read the linked threads to make sure you buy the right Eye TV to then be able to put it through your Mac mini.

Great system - I got rid of VHS, DVD, CD players and my set top box and replaced them all with my Mac mini!

yup, i use my mac mini and an eye TV hybrid using the supplied breakout cable to hook into austar service - i imagine the foxtel service would be no different.

it works a treat and the hybrid can still receive all the digital FTA as well as analogue FTA so it really covers all the bases.

Bonnie,

To my mind the key to your question is whether you really want a device that does "so much more", or if you just want to record Foxtel for later viewing.

If it's the latter, spend the extra money and invest in a Foxtel IQ, which does a very good job of recording Foxtel programs purely for later viewing on the same TV (ie no exporting, copying or sharing). If you're looking perhaps to record the occasional Foxtel show onto DVD to watch somewhere else, pick up a stand-alone DVD recorder to connect to your Foxtel box and that'll serve your needs simply and effectively.

The Mac Mini solution is really only a good idea if you plan on using those "many more" features on a regular basis. For instance the biggest feature I wanted was the ability to instantly access any of my TV shows or DVDs from any TV in the house using a common interface and common play lists - which is why I needed to look at a computer-based solution rather than a stand-alone box solution. I use a central server to record free to air TV shows and add them to the common library, and I only occasionally watch live TV so in my case a Mac Mini solution worked out as the best option.

If you'd like a similar type of solution yourself then spending the time & money upfront in building a Mac Mini system is probably a worthwhile investment. However, if you're just looking at a simple 'record Foxtel' type of requirement, you'll probably find that the stand-alone device option is a better bet.

To add to James' great post - the one reason I use a mini for recording is that EyeTV exports to iPod or AppleTV, saving me stuffing around if i want to copy a TV show later on.
