updating firmware on imac g3

Hello,

Further to my last threads, I'm now trying to update the firmware on this g3 iMac.
The problem, of course, is that I tried to install 10.4 and the screen went black.

So the screen is 'dead' but there's an external VGA port that works. I need to install OS 9 to install the firmware update, don't I?

When I insert the os9 CD, though, and boot from it, it doesn't 'see' the iMac's hard drive, so it can't install.
When I boot it normally (into 10.2), I cannot install OS 9 - only start some kind of classic mode.
And when I try and start it in Firewire Target Disk mode, (by holding T), it just boots into 10.2.

What do I do?!

Yep, it's a pain but you need to install OS 9 to a bootable drive to install the firmware. You may not be able to "see" your internal hard disk as it may not have OS 9 disk drivers installed - an option checked when you format a drive under OS X.

The easiest way to do the firmware upgrade would be to install OS 9 onto a spare/or external FW drive. Or, format the internal drive (using Apple's Drive Setup utility under OS 9), then install 10.4 from scratch. Otherwise, installing OS 9 onto an existing version of OS X can make things get messy.

That's what I did - OS 9 first + firmware, then OS 10. 4.

OK - I have a few spare hard drives, so I'll

1. Boot up the mac with the external FW hard drive attached and the OS 9 CD inserted..
2. Install OS9 to the external drive
3. Download and run the firmware updater
4. Clean install of 10.4 on the mac's hard drive

Sound good?

Cheers everyone

You could try booting off your 10.4 dvd and then use disk utilities (on the dvd) to format the drive with the os 9 drivers. At that point you should be able to restart from the os 9 cd and the install program should see the hard disk. not quite as good as using an external firewire drive it should work!

Good idea - I like it, much simpler than the external drive!
