B&W G3 = RAM Type: PC100
iMac G3 500mhz = RAM Type: PC100

So yes

Hey guys, I took two 256 MB sticks of PC 100 ram out of my old G3 b&w and installed it in the imac, and it gave a beep at startup and refused to go any further. After a little research on the apple site, I found the following good advice after a fellow had the same happen to him that happened to me:

Following is a definition of what the error beeps at startup time
signify:
One Beep:
No RAM is installed or detected.
Two Beeps:
Incompatible memory is installed. (The iMac
ships with PC-100 SDRAM and does not accept SDRAM SO-
DIMMs or EDO memory).
Three Beeps:
No RAM banks passed memory testing.
Four or Five Beeps:
Bad checksum for the remainder of the
boot ROM. The ROM (which is located on the processor module)
is bad."

So the ram didn't work, but a 128 MB stick of sdram I also pulled from the b&w did, so I now only have a total of 256 MB of ram, which seems to run Panther all right, but I doubt would run Tiger.

jdagis,

the only reason I can think of why the RAM from your B&W doesn't work in your iMac is that the B&W RAM isn't double-sided; iMacs need this otherwise funky things will happen.

Hello Byrd, the opposite has happened—the sticks that work are single sided (128 MB), and the ones that don't work are double sided (256 MB) .

Crazy stuff - do the 256MB sticks work at all on their own?

(PS. keep up the jokes in the Orange Sofa, they're the best)

goodonyerbyrd they made me laugh too. The double sided ram works fine in my b&w 400, so I'm disappointed they wouldn't work in the imac which was a gift from a friend who didn't have room for it.
