I need some advice for my partner.

I have a PM dual 1.8 with 20" Cinema display, and since owning it, I can't keep her off it. She has warmed to the entire mac experience we've all known about for a long time.

The advice I need: to buy a system like mine will stretch her budget. Is the new imac G5 (most likely the 20" model) a powerful machine to work with on a daily basis, or is it a poor shadow of the G5, made thus so to fit into the price bracket?

If she needs to do Microsoft Word documents no problem, if she needs to do HD Video editing she will run our of grunt....in other words, you need to tell us what she is doing on it beofre this question can be answered.

Sure.

She will need to run Matlab.

Of course once she gets familiar with it all, Final Cut Pro will be on the agenda as well.

Hmmm low end dual G5 would be good, however iMac is okay for this, hell I edit on my G4 iMac... so yeah, it just won't be AS fast when it comes to rendering.

The real hobble with the iMacs and the single processor G5 in the current line up is the 600 Mhz system bus.

I would suggest that you invest in the dual G5 1.8 and just use either her existing monitor, if she has one, or buy a smaller or CRT. Remember that Apple dropped their pricing on G5s and monitors recently.

If you are eligible for education pricing, running Matlab I suspect you might be, then greater savings are possible. Ultimately it is better to save for a few extra months and buy something "insanely great" than rush and buy something ordinary.
