G5 Coolant Leakage

Recently, my G5 DP 2.7 sprang a coolant leak destroying the PSU, logicboard, coolant system and both processors. Here's a picture of the PSU:

Apple made three liquid cooled models: the G5 DP 2.5, G5 DP 2.7 and G5 Quad.

This issue seems to arise around 18 to 24 months after purchase. I strongly urge any owners of these G5 models to read up on this topic.

Disko,

Just before my G5 blew completely, I noticed some odd behaviour like the second processor running cooler than usual and the fans spinning up when launching apps. If the problem is caught early enoujgh, damage may be far less than what happened with mine.

Just something to keep an eye on and hope you have AppleCare and don't have to use it. =)

So is it going to be replaced by Applecare protection?

Purana, in my situation, probably. My G5 has been in the shop 17 days now. If it's not fixed by tomorrow, Apple has promised me a replacement Mac Pro. However, that was after tons of phone calls on my part to supervisors in Customer Relations and product specialists. Apple's position is that if it's the first time the G5 goes into repair, they will do just that: attempt to repair it, regardless of how extensive the damage is. The general rule is that after the third time in for repairs, then one is eligable for a replacement.

It's three repairs, all the same part... Be very, very persistant, a bit pushy...you can get your way with Apple

Doesnt always need to be the same part. 3 major repairs is usally enough even if its 3 different parts

It's really a design flaw and should be covered warranty or not, unfortunately this is unlikely to go the way of the eMac logic board cases etc.

Not 100% sure about apple, but i know for us that it must be 3 related incidents.

I've seen people with 5 different issues and as such they won't get a replacement - and the replacement is up to the managers discretion so it doesn't always happen either.

I know what it is...
Three of the same part...if you're pushy enough you can get any multi-part repair thru... But that's their policy, they'll refer you to it everytime
