Conclusion

Today, the Apple agent phoned me to finalize the process of replacing the G5 with a Mac Pro. As I mentioned previously, Apple offered a quad-core (2 x 2 core) 3.0 GHZ Mac Pro with a 500 GB HD, BT + Airport Extreme and a compliment of RAM equivalent to that in the G5, 8 GB. The replacement of RAM was conditional upon providing receipts from OWC (otherworldcomputing.com) where I bought all but the original 1 GB or RAM that came with the G5.

This morning, I phoned OWC and they emailed pdfs of all relevant invoices which I will either email or fax to the Apple agent.

I explained to the agent that I wanted to receive the Mac Pro before shipping the G5 back to them so that I could swap its HDs and pull my data off them (as if i were to ship it back before the Mac Pro arrived, i'd have to send them the original 400 GB drive it came with and I don't have a SATA enclosure to access files from the drive.) Apple agreed to this upon condition that I give them my credit card number and fill out some legal forms which they are due to send later today or tomorrow stating that if I don't return the G5 within 30 days from the time I receive the Mac Pro, then I'll have to pay for the Mac Pro replacement. Also, I am going to pay Apple an additional $699 USD to upgrade the quad core Mac Pro to an 8-core. This too will be included in the legal documentation that I shall sign.

Once I receive the legal documentation, sign it and send it back to Apple, they'll ship the 8-core Mac Pro within a business day or two.

To sum it all up, I'm getting a Mac Pro 8-core with 8 GB RAM, a 7300 GT graphics card, a 500 GB HD, BT + Airport Extreme and a full Applecare protection plan (at a pro-rated price based on how long I had the G5 under Applecare.) My total cost will be *about $800.

All in all, though I did encounter several supervisory drones on the phone, given the final outcome, I'm extremely happy. Good things CAN happen when dealing with Apple!

Dave

Why would he be hated?

His machine broke and was replaced by apple.

Gelfie,

So long as I'm the recepient of your hatred, I couldn't feel better! After all, it's better to make a bad impression on somebody than none at all. =)

Btw, gelfie - did I mention today for the fifth time that I'm going through with my order for that 8-core CTO with the Radeon x1900?

I wouldn't want my memories of you to fade into obscurity, so I think I'll have an inscriptoin on the side of the Mac saying, "By the time you read this inscription, I'll have finished ripping 2 fulll sized DVDs to H.264!"

Gelfie,

Hugs and kisses (*smooch),

Dave

PS - For the rest of you readers, gelfie and I have been at this for 5 years now. It's all in good fun. =)

I'd buy a mac pro... if it wasn't a fifth of my wage on a basic model.

G5 Leak

I had exactly the same thing happen. I had the quad 2.7Ghz G5 and one day I go to my machine and its turned off - I leave it on always - and it won restart. I thought it was the power supply, so i brought it inot a MacFix place and they said that the coolant leaked.

I brought it to Apple and they replaced the motherboard, both processors, and the power supply. They replaced these a total of 3 times, each. It was basically 3 months of hell. I am self employed as a multimedia designer and I was working off a slow powerbook as my replacement and I had just landed a major project. It totally sucked.

I gave Apple a call after the third replacement failed and they agreed to replace the whole thing with a new PowerMac - the quad 2.5. Applecare was a big help. Since I ordered on teh Web store, and I had originally upgraded some things at purchase, they gave me the equivilent upgrades. All in all the machine is still working great after a year.

Dont let up. And remind the people at Apple just how freaking heavy those 2.7's are. Having to lug that thing in to the store 3x is tough!

I didn't know the eMacs or iMac G5 could leak due to lack of Fluid Cooling.
