g4 questions...

This might be a dumb question, but i can't seem to find an answer so far where i have looked, I am just learning macs and I bought a G4, When it starts up it will either go to just a screen with a folder in the middle, or a password screen?? Any idea what this is? or what the password might be. I have tried putting in my os9 disc and holding down "c" while it boots but it just goes to the screen with a folder, your help would be very appreciated
Thanks,
Brian

The first icon is the Mac trying to find a bootable volume. The password is for open firmware and it would appear the previous owner set it up so you have to enter the password to start the Mac.

If you want to re-install and start from scratch then you need to force reset the password.

Force Removing Password Protection

1) Add or remove DIMMs to change the total amount of RAM in the computer.

2) Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + P + R).

I did that, I did a pram like it says to do on apple's website but it doesn't do anything, just stays at the gray screen until I let the keys go and the folder pops up unitl i hit the option key for the password screen.
