Mini startup/hard drive problem

My niece has dropped off her mini to me as it is having issues starting up. It gets to the grey screen and the gear spins and spins and spins eventually giving a message after about 20 minutes that I have to restart.

Running disk utility off the CD the hard drive takes an eternity to be recognised. Once recognised I was able to repair the disk with no dramas - in fact it said there were no errors to fix. SMART status is Verified.

Managed to complete an archive and install but while trying to run disk utility from the hard drive results in the same problem of the system taking a very long time to recognise the drives.

Now apparently she was "just" running software updates when problems occurred - Is this a sign of her hard drive dying?

Sounds about right,

Try cloning the drive and see what happens (of course putting the new drive back in )
