iMac - RAM jammed/stuck
Ah hello, it's the apple newbie back with yet another problem with her mac
I just bought 1 gig of new ram for my iMac Intel Core Duo and when I went to install it, it clicked and now it wont come out at all, it's jammed in (and I didn't force it). My first reaction was it must be the wrong ram
Here is the exact RAM used:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208037
But my friend who sold it to me assures it will work in my iMac.... is he right?
I tried pushing it all the way in and turning on the iMac but the white light jus flashes and nothing happens (it wont turn on)
What is happening, why will the iMac not accept the RAM or eject it?
So could it be the ejector clips or something?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

any chance of getting a pic of what you've done for the folks at home??
failing that, i'm sure a quick trip to your local Apple service centre, a smile and a kind word should get someone to quickly help you out, free of charge. until then, don't switch it on!

No one know if its not just the wrong RAM?
I'll have to take it to the apple store anyway, it's still got a broken DVD player, lol. But Id sleep easier tonight if I at least knew whether its the computer not ejecting it, or the wrong RAM getting stuck x_x
I cant cut a break
Here's some pics, but it's kinda hard to tell whats going on. It looks like two ram sitting in there nicely, but the bottom slot is jammed XP I need a macro cam so you can see up close better, these photos are useless

Are you sure you aligned it in the slot the right way? Was it oriented correctly? Did you get it slipped under the slot instead of in it?
Or perhaps this little review on the very newegg page that you gave the link to gives a hint:
"
Pros: PRICE!! no conflicts with Mac System recognized it immediately Price
Cons: A bit of a tight fit, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have trouble if I ever want to remove it
Other Thoughts: I have an iMac G5 intel core duo. The chip was ever so slightly wider than the memory apple installed, and the fitting was rather snug (pretty alarming when you're trying to force it in). But once you get it in, everything runs great. I see a huge improvement!
"
EDIT: And for the sake of your mac, DON'T power it up until you've got the stuff out and resolved the issue.

shidesha, i don't mean to make you sound stupid, but you need to pull the RAM out dead straight. try clicking it back in and then ejecting it again. i found the easiest way to pull the RAM out is to grasp each end using my thumb and index finger, then gently slide it out towards me.

Thats cool, Ive done this heaps of times with pc's so I was being extra carefull, it wasnt like i just pushed it in weird or anything... Both my brother and I (hes a comp tech x_x figures) have tried to pull the darn thing out but nothings working. It looks like i punched it in but I didnt lol.
I had a close look again too and it certainly seems like i got it right in the slot, I mean it moved in soothly enough but now just wont come out.
The eject moves it out about a quarter of an inch, enough to grab it but its stuck like tarzans grip
I think the only thing that would get it out (besides opening the case) would be a pair of pliers, which will most likely mutilate the RAM (if it isn't broken already...)
But yeah, theres no way this thing will come out gently x_x
I probably should have saved up extra and bought it from the apple store instead of my friend. But oh well. I tried at least.
I've put ram in an imac before with no problems... its just this stick wont come out. NFI why though

Thats what I said to my friend with the RAM and brother, but they both insisted I try it. I did it once and it crapped out with the flashing light, so Im kinda worried. I definatly wont try it again though.
Thanks for the heads up

Found the following quote searching for this issue:

As for the memory being easy to install, it is just as easy to SCREW IT UP, because the little levers dont always work to secure the RAM and the RAM can fit in there without the levers lifting, which causes a BIG problem because the RAM is stuck and theres no way to close the RAM cover door. Be careful, gentle, and you shouldnt have a problem. I have had to service no fewer than 5 iMac intels because of RAM being stuck and one of the iMacs needed a logic board replacement as a result!

I saw you've posted on the Apple discussion boards too, I found this thread on there. Not sure if it really helps you though.

Thanks heaps for that post, its a big help
I guess I did it wrong, when I go into the apple store I should probably ask them to show me how to do it for the future so I don't stuff it up next time >_< I thought I did it gently but I guess it was bad luck with my aim x_x
I tried shoving it in further in case thats all it was but its still got the flashing monitor /sleep light.
God, I feel like such a n00b

It sounds like it's a pretty poor design, and you're not alone with this issue.

Considered trying to squirt a small amount of non-conductive lubricant spray into the slot? This should enable you to free the stuck RAM module more easily.
Or, take the whole thing into a Mac reseller and ask them to look at it for you.

Well at leats it's reassuring that it's a fairly common (well to some degree) problem. Hopefully the ram is still useable.
I'm scared though because of my past history with mac problems (God I am unlucky) that Ill stuff something up, so Im going to take it to them on saturday morning and ask if they can fit ir properly for me. Hopefully then I wont have to buy new ram again
Thanks for all the advice and help again
I know someone at this forum is always friendly enough to help me, and it means ALOT

Well it's becoming increasing obvious you're really a closet mac-sadist who gets pleasure out of hurting your innocent little computer. . . But that's alright.

LOL it looks like that huh. Youll think it even more now..
I had another look at it and decided to try shoving it in hard again (ive done this heaps but this time i practically punched it in frustration... stupid i know).
Anyway now the RAM WORKS x_x It made a horrible crunching sound when i bashed it in too, I guess its just a bit chunkier since it was cheap?
But yay, it's working All I need now is to get around to fixing the DVD drive x_x
