Power Macintosh 6100/60w

Power Macintosh 6100/60w PowerPC Model Number M1596

I was given this 6100 without any leads or monitor, but told it works.
Is it worth finding leads for it ( if so where ) and will it work with my LCD ?
What OS's can I put on it ?

Thanks,
Rodney

The 6100/60 is the entry level of the first generation of Power PC machines. They were slow 10 years ago. I couldn't see it being of much use now but I'm sure Dana would disagree. It really depends on what you want. If it's retro cool, there are much nicer machines - like a Quadra 840AV or 950 for eg - if it's a mail server running some sort of *NIX, it would probablty be fine. If it blows up, I have one you can use for parts.

They support 7.1.2 to 9.1 in terms of operating system, along with the Apple Copland OS. You can probably still use it for quite a bit overall, you just need to find tasks it's suited for.

I myself would like one just so I can boot Apple Copland on it.

It's a nice machine. Good for running a collection of old software. I would recommend installing 7.1.2 or 7.5 rather than anything newer, but I have 8.1 installed on mine and it works relatively fast.

You can track down a Mac-to VGA adapter (handy little things) on ebay or at swapmeets.

And where can you get Copland? I thought it was unreleased...

The 6100/60 is good enough to run OS 8.x (ideally 8.6 if you load it with RAM for stability's sake), and a lot faster than early 603e-based Macs, eg. 5200/6200. The only annoying thing about these machines is the proprietary monitor cable they use.

They're still not very fast, but good for older Mac games - especially Marathon which should run OK on it

AlephOne for those in the know. Now open source freeware from Bungie (wholly owned by Microsoft I believe). Run Marathon how it was meant to be on proper hardware.

Didn't this model also come in a version that had a PC-on-a-card inside?

Yeah, there were "DOS compatible" models around, or a later add-in card. Not very exciting in terms of performance, even compared to a similar PC

Yeah, I started a job at a University as a Director programmer in '96 or '97, and I had to test my stuff on one of those. Gave me the s**ts.
